This integrated residential and commercial complex has an open terrace bathed in a healing garden that captures the morning bliss.

The 2.75 cents plot area is situated in a residential area within the planned city of Mysore. An approach of a multifunctional space planning technique has been adopted for this project. One may muse upon the practicality of designing a fair space on a small piece of land but this is where efficiency, planning, creativity and technique of the designer comes into play.

Space Planning and Approach

The building is designed to accommodate three floors, with the ground and first floor designed as a commercial complex and the two floors above graciously forms a retreat space for the Ayurveda doctors and their loved ones. Since the building serves two magnetically opposite functions, one being public and the other private, entrances to each space are dignified and follow two different pathways that never cross each other, ensuring privacy. The entrances are separated physically with jali partitions that blurs the vision and seeps in light and air.

Ground floor consists of commercial spaces occupying approximately 93 sq mt area complete with staircases for vertical circulation. The staircase leads to a larger commercial space of 95 sq mt that is designed to have a good view from within and vice versa. Alternatively, the residential space is also approached by a parallel route on the ground floor leading one to a private lift and a staircase.

As one enters the living space on the second floor, the presence of a large window is immediately acknowledged, lighting up the entire room. The living room is spaced in with the dining room converting it into one sizable area. This is a three bedroom residence complete with modern utilities and an unwavering aesthetic charm. All bedrooms are equipped with attached toilets and dressing areas, custom designed to preferences. Here is a house that portrays compact planning with two living rooms located on two different floors serving very
specific functions. Two of the three bedrooms are designed on the upper floor that serves as a private abode for the inhabitants. Every room written into this vertical abode is conceptualised to capture and bring in fragments of exterior views with the use of bay windows, balconies and openings that span the ceiling heights. The roof of the house is designed to accommodate a terrace garden with focus given to nurturing of Ayurvedic plants. The terrace is shielded from direct sun rays by an overhead metal framed roof camouflaged in creepers and climbers.

Design

Designed with perfect geometry, rhythm and proportion, the building facade soars vertically complete with an arched elevation. The stair room occupying the terraced area graciously adds to the design element with its complimenting arched roof and subtle appearance. The facade is accentuated with louvres made out of reused wooden planks that filter in warmth and radiance and buffers against dust and noise. The choice of design elements, roof garden and overall planning process contributes to the energy-efficient and sustainable feature of this stand-out residence. The idea is to keep it simple yet appealing with the use of monotonous colour palette and materials.
